Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater
The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater at the iconic Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles required an AV refresh to enhance the audience experience while supporting a flexible space used for cinema-grade films, live talks, and public programs.
The Griffith Foundation and consultant Theater DNA selected Solotech to design and implement a system capable of delivering high-quality, consistent performance while remaining intuitive enough for museum guides and staff with limited AV experience. Simplicity was a key consideration, helping ensure scalability and ease of operation across a wide variety of events.
At the heart of the installation is a Q-SYS platform that unifies audio, video, and control through a streamlined user interface. Q-SYS was chosen for its ability to integrate multiple technologies into a single system.
For film screenings and immersive content, overhead speakers were selected to create a more enveloping listening experience. As Patrick So, Program Advisor at Griffith Observatory, explains, the goal was to recreate the feeling that audiences are not simply watching a film, but are part of the environment.
Complementing the Q-SYS ecosystem, the theater incorporates Renkus-Heinz ICONYX loudspeaker technology optimized for spoken-word presentations, helping ensure clear, consistent audio throughout the space.
More than a technical refresh, the project showcases how Solotech helped create an experience that benefits both presenters and audiences, supporting the theater’s role as a destination for learning, exploration, and entertainment.
